Tom Elliott says he’s not surprised by reported claims from veteran frontline highway patrol officers that speed cameras are little more than revenue raisers for governments.

A report in Drive.com.au said the unnamed officers claimed there was a “focus on speed cameras because they are an easy way to raise revenue while using road safety as a cover”.

“It will always be cloaked in terms of being all about road safety, not about raising money, but it is a big money raiser for the state government,” Tom Elliott said.

But Professor Stuart Newstead, Director of the Accident Research Centre at Monash University, said the evidence couldn’t be more clear.

“The research certainly shows a very strong association between speeding and both crash risk, but also the severity of injury outcome in the event of a crash,” he said.
