As reported by The Age, the Wurundjeri people have filed a native title claim over most of Greater Melbourne.

“I almost fell off a chair this morning when I read this in the newspaper,” Tom Elliott said.

The claim is said not to impact the rights of property owners; however, a successful claim could give the Wurundjeri people influence over water and land use.

State Political Editor at The Age, Chip Le Grand, told Tom Elliott, “Property owners, you have a freehold title over your land that extinguishes native title, so for most of Melbourne, native title doesn’t really apply in any practical sense”.
