Tom Elliott reacts to ‘nonsense’ calls to raise the dole

Tom Elliott says there is “no excuse” for Australians to be signing up for welfare at the moment, given the unemployment rate.

“I am serious about this,” the 3AW Drive host said on Tuesday.

“The government should be putting the dole down, not up, because there are more jobs than there are unemployed people right now.”

Cassandra Goldie, Chief Executive of the Australian Council of Social Service, said there was “no question” there were many opportunities for paid work.

But she said not everybody was offered those opportunities.
