Tom Elliott went to the soccer on Friday night.

And he was pleasantly surprised.

The 3AW Drive host was critical of the behaviour of fans recently and decided to go and check it out for himself.

‘I was brave. I took a risk. I went to go and watch the Melbourne Victory,’ he said.

And while the 1-0 win to Adelaide was far from a spectacle, it was some of the action off-field which caught Tom’s eye.

He spotted a number of Chinese businessman at a function, which made him ponder the future of football in Victoria.

‘Whether or not soccer works in Melbourne, or indeed Australia, does not matter,’ Tom Elliott explained.

‘Its status as the global game is absolutely assured.

‘But if Aussie Rules does not succeed in this city, if young kids growing up in Victoria and the southern states don’t want to play Aussie Rules and instead play soccer, then Aussie Rules as a sport is dead.’
