Tom Elliott says any money Cassie Sainsbury’s family makes should fund her legal case

Jacqui Felgate

Tom Elliott says Cassie Sainsbury shouldn’t be given legal aid if reports her family has been offered money to speak with 60 Minutes are true.

He says any money the family makes from her story should fund her legal case.

Ms Sainsbury stands accused of trying to smuggle more than $1 million worth of cocaine out of Colombia.

She’s applied for taxpayer-funded legal aid.

‘If other 60 Minutes stories are anything to go by, the family could net anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000, if not more,’ Tom Elliott explained on Tuesday.

‘So why on earth should we ? the taxpayers of Australia ? pay her legal bills?

‘Quite frankly, if her family cares for her and is worried about her, which I’m sure they probably are ? they certainly should be ? if they’re suddenly given say, $75,000, by Channel 9 then use that to pay for the lawyer’s bills.’
