Tom Elliott has questioned why the Catholic Church has been able to survive the ongoing sexual abuse scandal.

He said any other organisation wouldn’t have.

‘We appear to have a different standard of behaviour for Churches,’ he said.

‘If the Church was a sporting club, it’d be out of business.

‘If it was a company, it would have been put into administration.

‘If it was a government, it would have been voted out.’

He said the saga undermines the Church’s moral authority.

‘One thing the Catholic Church does, that all churches do, is lecture everybody on morality.

‘They covered up abuse of minors.

‘Everybody with half a moral bone in their body knows that this sort of behaviour is wrong, but the Church covered it up.’
