Tom Elliott says a proposed 20 per cent tax on sugary drinks, backed by the Greens, is nothing more than a ‘nanny state’ suggestion.

The 3AW Drive host said everyone was aware that drinking large amounts of soft drink was bad for you.

‘Willpower is the solution, not a sugar tax,’ he said on Wednesday.

But Jane Martin, executive manager of the Obesity Policy Coalition, said it was a ‘pretty amazing’ proposal.

‘It will make a difference,’ she said on 3AW Drive.
