A story Tom Elliott heard at the footy on Saturday had him wondering where the world was heading.

An acquaintance of Tom’s (of Sri Lankan descent) told him he’d been hauled into HR at a Melbourne accounting form with a colleague over their use of nicknames at work.

Roger calls his Indian-born friend “Curry” and is called “Boatie” in return.

It was a bit of harmless banter between colleagues. Or so they thought.

“They’ve been called into the HR division to explain their actions,” Tom said on 3AW Drive.

“Apparently what they’re doing is offensive.

“They both want to be called by their name for each other.

“What do you do if people take offence on behalf of somebody else?

“Society is going mad.”
