Tom Elliott slams ACTU call for overhaul of paid parental leave
Tom Elliott has slammed a paper released by the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) calling for an overhaul of paid parental leave.
The paper says by 2030 the government should offer 52 weeks of parental leave at the parent’s pre-child salary including super.
“I don’t mind some money being paid,” Tom said on 3AW Drive.
“I mean it is very expensive to have a child.
“But to pay highly paid people who can probably have children, courtesy of the taxpayer, just to me does not sound right at all.”
Emma Dawson, Executive Director of Per Capita, said it would make it one of the most generous schemes in the world.
“The purpose of this is to strengthen women’s economic security throughout the life course,” she said.
“That means they’re less of a burden on the taxpayer in older age as well.”
