The national president of the Australian Medical Association says the country is in a ‘ridiculous situation’ where hundreds of trained medical students can’t gain an internship to formalise their qualification as a doctor.

Tom Elliott explored the issue with Dr Michael Gannon on Tuesday.

‘We’ve got something like 3700 doctors coming out each year,’ Dr Gannon explained on 3AW Drive.

‘Now we’ve got the ridiculous situation where we’ve got people who are trained in Australian medical schools, understand our system, are proficient in English and understand our unique health system ? but there’s not enough internships for them.’
