Tom Elliott says he can’t believe Bill Shorten has “shot himself in the foot” after his backdown on company tax policy.

Shorten announced on Friday he wouldn’t be repealing already-legislated company tax cuts.

Mr Shorten’s initial decision sparked backlash from his colleagues.

Tom Elliott said the change of mind could prove costly.

“Eight months ago, I said Bill Shorten was a near-certainty to become the next Prime Minister of Australia,” the 3AW Drive host said on Friday.

“I thought he was disciplined, that Malcolm Turnbull had a tin ear and was going to make too many mistakes.

“I didn’t think Bill would do something as stupid as this and shoot himself in the foot … but he did.”

Tom Elliott said there was a “big sound” coming out of Canberra today.
