Tom Elliott says he can understand why some are concerned by a renewed push for a national digital verification ID, but he’d personally be in favour of only having to carry one piece of identification with him.

“It reminds me of the “Australia Card” idea in the ’80s, which caused a big stir at the time,” he said.

Finance Minister Katy Gallagher has predicted it could be in place within 12 months.

Nigel Phair, Professor of Cyber Security at Monash University, said hacking was a definite risk.

“The best way not to have a data breach is to not have the data,” he said.
