‘Sadly, I’m about to end the year accused of being sexist. But anyway, here we go…’

That’s how Tony Jones launched into this morning’s editorial about a proposal to cut funding from sporting boards that featuring less than 40 per cent women.

‘It’s inherently stupid,’ said Tony Jones.

‘You should only have people on the board who are capable of doing the job.’

Later, Tony Jones clashed with acting sports minister Philip Dalidakis over the issue.

‘We’re not in Uganda,’ Mr Dalidakis said.

But he went on to say the government hadn’t committed to any of recommendations.

‘(Withholding money based on quotas) is a recommendation; it doesn’t mean the government’s going to do it.’
