A Liberal MP who took aim at a painting on display at Parliament House admits it was a publicity stunt!

Sydney MP Craig Kelly questioned in a Facebook post on Tuesday whether the piece – The Witches by Wendy Sharpe – was suitable for the building.

But Mr Kelly revealed on 3AW Drive he simply wanted to draw attention to the fact there was minimal Australian art on display in Canberra.

‘It’s a bit of fun,’ Mr Kelly told Tom Elliott.

‘At Parliament House we’ve got a wonderful opportunity – we’ve got thousands of foreign tourists coming in every week and we’ve got all these walls where we can hang artwork.

‘(But) we should be hanging the best of our Aboriginal art, the best of our many historical pieces (and) I’ve always thought we just do not have enough artwork on display.’
