Tornado Thursday: How it unfolded

Article image for Tornado Thursday: How it unfolded

Victoria is now in clean-up mode after severe weather tore through the state, prompting the Bureau of Metereology to issue a tornado warning for Melbourne.

A funnel-shaped cloud reportedly touched down at Tullamarine around 2.30pm on Thursday, with reports of similar cloud activity at St Albans.

Torrential rain caused flash flooding in the inner suburbs, including Flemington, Kensington, Footscray and South Melbourne.

Severe weather warnings issued for damaging winds, heavy rainfall, hail and tornadoes have since been downgraded across most of the state.

Horse racing at Flemington and flights out of Melbourne Airport were both delayed briefly.

Tim Wiebusch, State Commander for the SES, told Tom Elliott they received hundreds of calls for assistance during the storm.

The 3AW Drive program was sent a video showing a pharmacy flooding.
