Traffic chaos is forecast from the West Gate Tunnel Project.

A damning City of Melbourne report says the 5.5 billion dollar project will create peak-hour traffic in North Melbourne streets for up to 14 hours every day.

The council’s response to the state government’s major road project also condemns the loss of almost 750 trees and the damage to the Moonee Ponds Creek corridor.

Construction to build more lanes on the West Gate Freeway and dig a four kilometre tunnel linking the freeway near Yarraville to the Maribyrnong River, starts in 2022.

The City of Melbourne argues the design isn’t good enough to ease congestion on the M1 or reduce the negative impacts of truck traffic on residential areas.
