Transgender footballer says the Hannah Mouncey decision should be a ‘teachable moment’ for the AFL
The first openly transgender footballer says the decision to exclude Hannah Mouncey from the AFLW should be a “teachable moment” for the league.
Rowe, a friend of Mouncey, said she was no-doubt her friend was “pragmatic” about the decision.
“I could imagine she’s disappointed, but I think for her it’s just onwards and upwards as far as her career is concerned,” she said.
Rowe says she hopes the AFL will engage with members of the transgender community from now on. She’s part of a transphobia protest outside AFL House today.

The organisers of the protest hope to encourage the league to reverse the decision.
“In my opinion they got this wrong, but the important thing is it needs to become a teachable moment,” she said.
“We need to work with the AFL now, so that we can correct this for the future.”
