Unilever New Zealand has trialed a four-day working week for 18 months, and has decided to extend the trial to its Australian counterparts after it was considered “overwhelmingly positive”.

Managing Director of Unilever New Zealand, Cameron Heath, spoke to Tom Elliott on the response to the trial by the workers.

“There was an overwhelmingly positive support of the trial and we had most of our staff eagerly opt in,” Mr Heath said.

Mr Heath was adamant the trial wasn’t an exercise of cramming five days of work into four, but rather about increasing efficiency.

“We really challenged people to think differently about how they work, we challenged them to behave differently, to reduce time in meetings and to actively prioritise the work they needed to do,” Mr Heath said.
