Volunteers are be sought to take part in phase one trials of new next generation COVID-19 vaccines.

Two second-generation Melbourne-made COVID-19 vaccine candidates one developed by the Doherty Institute, and the other by Monash University will soon enter trials.

The state government contributed $5 million towards the research into the two potential vaccines.

Head of Vaccine and Immunisation Research Group, Professor Terry Nolan, says it’s hoped the vaccines will provided a more targeted attack against COVID-19 than existing vaccines.

“They are improved because they target not the whole spike protein but just the little bit at the end that’s the crucial bit for attaching to cells,” he explained to Ross and Russel.

“So, in theory, they should producer a purer immune response and hopefully an immune response that will have greater protection against different variants.”

Phase one trials of the jabs will include 114 people, and will be carried out over the next three months.
