Driver critical after truck hits barriers, rolls off a bridge on the Bass Highway
A truck driver is fighting for life after rolling off a bridge and plunging into the Bass River at Woolamai.
It’s believed the truck was bound for Phillip Island when it veered into the emergency lane and rolled down a 20 metre embankment on the Bass Highway near Hade Avenue just after 10am.
It ended up in the Bass River, landing on its roof.
The driver, aged in his 20s, was trapped in the wreckage and had to be cut free.
He was flown to hospital in a critical condition with serious head, chest and pelvis injuries.
Investigators are working to determine exactly what caused the accident, with delays expected south-bound on the Bass Highway for several hours.
