Twelve people have been killed and a number have been injured when a truck ploughed into a Christmas market in Berlin.

Local media, citing police at the scene, say it appears to be a deliberate attack.

Local reporter Jared Reed said the perpetrator may have been a refugee from Afghanistan or Pakistan, but that remains unconfirmed.

The incident has brought back memories of the attack in France in July when a man drove a 19-tonne truck along the Nice beach front, killing 86 people.

Correspondent Gavin Gray says he’s surprised at the lack of security, ‘I would have thought it’s unlikely that there wouldn’t have been some good police presence at this market.

That said, the lorry was clearly able to get access to where those people were without roadblocks.’

The driver of the truck has reportedly been arrested by German police, another suspect was killed.
