Police chief Graham Ashton says he was unaware about the true extent of Brett Guerin’s “abhorrent” online behaviour until it was made public by the media.

Mr Guerin quit Victoria Police five days after he first admitted to crude comments on 3AW Mornings. The matter was referred to IBAC.

On Monday night, in the wake of more posts under Mr Guerin’s fake name of choice being highlighted by The Age, Mr Guerin handed in his resignation.

Mr Ashton met with Mr Guerin after his interview at 3AW on Friday.

The chief commissioner told Neil Mitchell Mr Guerin did not confess to the posts that have since come to light.

“I was given the understanding that was the extent of it,” Mr Ashton told Neil Mitchell on Tuesday.

“Clearly it wasn’t.”
