Two boats destroyed in suspected arson attack at Mordialloc

Police arson squad detectives are investigating a blaze that’s destroyed two boats at Mordialloc.

Police spotted the fire at the Mordialloc pier near Pompei’s bridge at about 4.30am, taking about 40 minutes to bring it under control. 

Both boats have been destroyed and the blaze is being treated as suspicious.

Incident controller Dan Gatt says it was an intense fire.

‘Fibreglass is hard to get out on a bigger boat. Probably an eight metre boat, so the flames are pretty high it is pretty hot.’

‘What tends to happen, there’s two port holes… We broke the little port holes and put the dry-chem in through that.’
