Two dead after horror smash on Western Ring Road
Two people are dead and traffic chaos is expected after a car flipped off a bridge on the Western Ring Road.
The car fell more than 50 metres off the E.J. Whitten Bridge around 1.30am on Wednesday.
Paul witnessed the crash, telling 3AW Breakfast two cars came ‘flying past’ him while he was on the way to work.
‘It flipped in front of me and burst into flames,’ he told Ross and John.
‘It was quite surreal.’
Police have since confirmed the cars were involved in an illegal drag race after up to 100 cars were caught doing burnouts at Campbellfield earlier that evening.
Detective Inspector Bernie Rankin from the Major Collision Investigation Unit told Neil Mitchell the cars were travelling in excess of 160km/h.
‘A mixture of testosterone, adrenaline, young men and fast cars ? it’s never going to end well,’ he said on 3AW Mornings.
The event has since been linked to an illegal gathering of hoons known as the ‘northern skids.’
