Two key policy reforms that would help address Australia’s declining birth rate

There are serious concerns about Australia’s age demographic, with the birth rate continuing to fall.

Dr Liz Allen is a demographer at the Australian National University and told Tom Elliott there were two key policy levers the government could pull to help encourage more people to have children.

She said universal childcare and paid parental leave, for both parents, would make a significant impact.

“That would help support families and, perhaps, make things a little bit more doable,” she said.
