Two men are dead after being hit by a passenger train in Altona Meadows overnight.

The train driver desperately tried to enforce the emergency brakes but could not avoid the men who were struck at around 11.45pm Thursday night near Laverton station.

It is unclear exactly why they were on the tracks, however it’s understood the area they were hit is commonly used as an illegal crossing.

Trains on the Werribee line remain suspended from Laverton.

The men are yet to be formally identified.
