The uncle of a Victorian man who gave up his own life to save a group of children from the ocean says the family is in “total shock.”

Shaun Oliver drowned at Wollongong on Sunday afternoon.

He was walking alone along the beach when he spotted the kids in trouble.

“The whole family is just in total shock,” uncle Ralph Silver told 3AW Drive.

Mr Silver said Shaun’s actions were typical.

“It’s a strange feeling to have because you know what he did,” he said.

“A family has got all their kids and they can go on with their lives.

“I know they’ll be forever grateful.

“Something good has come out of this.”
