Leading football journalist Caroline Wilson thinks Ben Rutten’s days as Essendon coach are numbered.

Speaking to Neil Mitchell, Wilson said it’s “untenable” for Rutten to continue at the club.

She predicts the second-year coach will be finishing up “if not this week, then next week”.

Rutten maintains he still has the confidence of the players despite a disastrous season.

But Wilson says that’s not true.

“I don’t agree that he’s still got the confidence of the players, I’m afraid that’s not right anymore,” she said.

“It’s just really an act of bastardry to keep him hanging on and having to do these stand up press conferences.”
