US support for Israel may not be ‘unconditional’ says correspondent

As prospects of a ground invasion of Gaza by Israeli troops draw near, the United States is working to ensure Middle Eastern states do not join the conflict.

European bureau chief at Channel 7, Hugh Whitfeld, says the US is in a delicate position as a powerful ally of Israel, as it attempts to prevent expansion of conflict within the region and more civilian casualties.

“It feels like the US is stepping back a touch and not necessarily saying that Israel needs to show restraint, but certainly Israel … Joe Biden said, can’t occupy northern Gaza,” he said.
