More than one thousand young trees have been destroyed in a destructive and pointless act of vandalism in Melbourne’s west.

The 1200 banksia, wattle and gums trees in the city of Wyndham were only planted one month ago.

Councillor Heather Marcus told Tom Elliott it appears as if someone has run over the trees.

“I personally, am horrified,” she said.

“It looks as long they might have been run over by a motor vehicle.

“There’s probably six or so gardens with 200 trees in each, we thought we could see car marks.

“We believe it’s around $20,000 (damage) and that is ratepayer money that could be spent on other worthwhile projects.”

“We just cannot believe someone could be so destructive” she added.

“What possible joy could you get out of that,” Tom Elliott said.
