A VCE Physics teacher has lashed out at the state government’s plan to switch from gas to electric heating, claiming ‘nobody’ has thought about Bunsen Burners in Science classrooms in schools.

The state government reported last year that no new government funded buildings would be connected to gas mains, with the move to electric heating intended to reduce emissions.

Physics teacher Dr Len was outraged at this report, claiming schools have been left out of the picture.

“People thought of heating water and heating rooms, nobody has thought of Bunsen Burners,” he told Neil Mitchell.

Electric Hot Plates are set to replace Bunsen Burners in Science classrooms, with Dr Len angry about this replacement.

“We treat them very seriously and very safely, we take our year sevens through their Bunsen Burner licenses, how to light them, how to look after them and there are just some demonstrations that will not work without a direct Bunsen flame,” he said.
