Veterinarian Rebecca Wilcox has called for a new law to be introduced into parliament called “Veticare” which would essentially be a Medicare system for pets.

The system has crossbench support in the Victorian parliament and would be for pet owners only, and allow free access to vet care and clinics.

“It’s gutting for the owner and it’s gutting for the veterinarian and one of the major causes of compassion fatigue in the industry, is having to put animals to sleep because people simply can’t afford it,” Ms Wilcox told Neil Mitchell.
