Vic Budget: New CBD security measures following Bourke St
VIC BUDGET: What you need to know
Retractable bollards and a public alarm system will be installed in the CBD in a major security upgrade following the Bourke Street attack.
The Andrews Government will spend $10 million on the security measures responding not just to the Bourke Street attack, which claimed 6 lives, but to international terrorist events.
Retractable bollards will be installed at key pedestrian areas including the Bourke Street mall, Flinders St, Swanston St and Elizabeth St.
A public address and alarm system is also being introduced while 30 extra CCTV cameras will be installed.
Victoria Police will have the power to raise or lower the bollards.
Other emergency services and trams will be also able to move them on demand.
The bollards will start operating by the end of the year.
