VicRoads CEO John Merritt has announced he’s stepping down at the end of the year.

Mr Merritt was appointed in April 2014 and was responsible for launching the biggest capital works program Vicroads has ever undertaken.

He told Neil Mitchell he was taking some time off, before exploring other options.

“For me it’s time, it’s been my job to really open the organisation up, listening more to the community, apologising when we get it wrong, fixing things up, and that requires for me absolutely 110 per cent,” he said.

“There’s a limit to how long you can do that.”

He said there were still significant challenges ahead as the population in Melbourne booms.

“We are going to have to be at our best as a community as we deal with these things,” he said.

He said in his view, there’s an opportunity to “better use the great legacy infrastructure” in Melbourne.
