VicRoads admits tailgating on the Monash Freeway has got worse since it introduced a 90km/h trial for trucks.

But it denies it’s forced to cut short the trial after abandoning after just six months.

The trial was initially intended to last for 18 months, with claims slowing the trucks down would help ease congestion on the road.

VicRoads CEO John Merritt told Neil Mitchell it threw up a number of issues.

‘We’ve actually seen tailgating get a bit worse,’ he confessed.

Mr Merritt said VicRoads was still intending to proceed with a second part of the trial.
