Victoria Police considering removing cross from academy chapel
The chapel at the Victoria Police Academy may soon be without its large cross above the altar, with the space now being used for non-denominational gatherings and ceremonies.
This morning the Rumour File was told, “a historic chapel at an emergency services training ground is having the cross removed from its altar for fear of offending someone”.
Built in the 1950s, the chapel was rededicated as an interfaith chapel in 1974.
Victoria Police later confirmed with 3AW Breakfast they are considering taking the cross down, issuing the following statement.
“This chapel has been ‘deconsecrated’ and is not affiliated to any specific denomination. Being one of the largest rooms in the Academy, Victoria Police uses the chapel for many different, non-denominational gatherings and ceremonies. Therefore we are considering various options for the area currently displaying a large cross, including potentially installing a police badge.”
