Victoria Police have reached out to police minister Anthony Carbines to introduce a permit system for protests following months of disruptive and violent protests.

Tt would follow the lead of New South Wales who already utilise a similar system, but Nine News reporter, Damian Ryan, says protests still occur without permits, but states the system “works well”.

“You have to lodge an application to protest, or hold a public assembly …  you can’t just say ‘Okay, here’s the application, I want the permit, I want to protest tomorrow.’ That’s not going to happen,” he told Tom Elliott.

Press PLAY to hear the permit system’s impact in New South Wales and how it works

Libertarian Party MP, David Limbrick, has weighed in the proposal over concerns of who would be signing off on the protests “saying it’s not the way to go”.

He also says New South Wale’s system exists under the Roads Act to prevent protestors from blocking the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Press PLAY to hear why he thinks it’s “not the way to go”.
