Victoria’s police chief Graham Ashton says he is ’embarrassed’ after being caught speeding.

He was snapped travelling at 108km/h in a 100km/h zone on Peninsula Link.

He was made aware of the detection yesterday afternoon.

It is unclear when the offence occurred.

‘As Chief Commissioner of Police, I am deeply committed to road safety and am embarrassed and disappointed to find I have gone above the speed limit,’ he wrote in a statement this afternoon.

‘This was as a result of a lapse in concentration, which does not excuse my actions, but does highlight the need for constant attention behind the wheel.’

Mr Ashton will be fined $190 and lose one demerit point.

He says he will also make a donation of the same amount to Road Trauma Support Services.
