Victorian cheesemaker cops $9000 fine for sour milk stench

A Victorian cheesemaker has been fined $9087 over an offensive odour.
Yarra Valley Dairy was fined by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) over a strong “sour milk odour with earthy characteristics”.
EPA Northern Metropolitan Regional Manager, Jeremy Settle, says there have been complaints about the smell coming from the cheesemaker “for years”.
The EPA issued a request to the company to improve its wastewater treatment to minimise odour.
The cheesemaker was fined after failing to comply.
“This company here, their ponds weren’t being maintained correctly and that was creating … some pretty offensive odours,” he told Dee Dee.
“There’s many cheese manufacturers in the Yarra Valley area and many of the other ones have not got these levels of complaints and impacts.”
