Farmers’ Federation president issues grim ‘famine’ warning in the wake of floods
The state’s peak farmers group says it’s not unreasonable to use the word “famine” in the wake of the devastating floods.
Victorian Farmers’ Federation president Emma Germano says disasters are hitting continuously, and with no proper plan to mitigate the impact to food supplies, we’re “sleepwalking into a famine”.
“We have to get starting pretty real as a country and realise these things are happening more often and they’re more ferocious,” she told Neil Mitchell.

Ms Germano says the flood crisis will impact food availability and prices, but it’s impossible to say how significant that impact will be at this stage.
“I don’t see how it’s possible that we don’t see an impact and disruption coming through the supply chain over the next few months at the very least,” she said.
