The state government has promised Victorians they’ll soon be able to ditch Myki cards and pay for public transport on their mobile phones.

But there is still no exact date on when.

“We need to upgrade our ticketing system, more broadly,” Ben Carroll, Minister for Public Transport, Roads and Road Safety, said on 3AW Drive.

Passengers are able to pay for trains, trams and buses on their mobile phones in many cities around the world, including Sydney.

Mr Carroll denied Victoria had fallen behind.
