Victoria’s pricing regulator has announced it will take a look at the cost of hailing a taxi on the street.

The leader of the Transport Matters Party says cab drivers have been “absolutely shafted” throughout the pandemic and since the arrival of rideshare services and says a pay rise is well overdue.

“They’ve had one fare increase in 14 years, which I think most people would think is ridiculous,” Rod Barton told Tom Elliott.

He said Victoria had lost “so many professional drivers” in recent years, which had lead to a “casualisation” of the work force.

“And that’s not a good thing,” Mr Barton said.
