Parks Victoria rangers have been telling off children for playing on sand dunes on the Mornington Peninsula in a crackdown a Victorian MP says is “madness”.

Press PLAY below to hear why Liberal member for Brighton, James Newbury, thinks it’s overkill

The Herald Sun reports some children have been left in tears after being ordered off sand dunes, which are not cordoned off or signposted, by rangers.

The ranger action comes as part of a push to protect endangered hooded plovers and other native birdlife.

But opposition environment spokesperson and member for Brighton, James Newbury, says it’s overkill.

“Kicking them off the bottom of sand dunes … for having a little play, I think it’s just madness,” he told Neil Mitchell.

“If we want to protect these spaces for the next generation isn’t getting kid involved and talking to them about responsible usage part of what we should be doing as parents?”
