Victorian researchers have made a major discovery which could revolutionise cancer treatment.

A Monash University team has discovered how natural killer cells in the body can be used to better fight cancer.

They’ve discovered agents that not only destroy tumour cells, but also make them more easily spotted by the body’s natural killer cells.

Head of the Cancer Immunotherapy Laboratory at Monash University, Professor Nicholas Huntington, says the research is “looking at ways of trying to attract more immune cells into the cancer”.

“We know that natural killer cells …  are really important for driving and attracting other cells into the cancer, and that’s where a lot of immunotherapies are working at the moment … the problem is most cancers don’t have a lot of immune cells in them,” he told Ross and Russel.
