Victorian state schools ban ChatGPT AI tool
Victorian state schools will block students and staff from using artificial intelligence service ChatGPT.
It comes as the educational implications of the free online tool, which generates text in response to prompts, are examined.
President of the Victorian Principals Association, Andrew Dalgleish, says the ban is “an interim measure” and will “allow time to make sure the children are having conversations, that they’re discussing, that they’re learning”.

An Education Department spokesperson told The Age the decision to block the AI service from school servers was made because ChatGPT’s terms of service specify users must be at least 18-years-old.
New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania and Western Australia have already blocked ChatGPT in schools.
