The ‘real concern’ for Victoria’s top roads cop
Victoria’s top roads cop says there’s one road figure he finds “a real concern”.
While road deaths among 18 to 25-year-olds have doubled year-on-year, Assistant Commissioner Road Policing Glenn Weir says that reflects a return to the pre-pandemic norm.
“We need to be very careful … reflecting on last year,” he told Neil Mitchell.
“We know for last year we had significant periods of lockdown, so when you look at our lives lost this year — 106 lives lost in Victoria compared to 93.”
The five-year average road toll is 106.4.
Motorcycles are “the real concern” for the top roads cop.
Motorcycle deaths are up by four this year compared to the same time last year, and Mr Weir says the behaviour he’s seeing is troubling.
“It’s the reckless nature,” he said.
“We had a motorcyclist killed last week who was unlicensed and driving an unregistered motorbike.”
