Victoria’s zoos introduce steps to protect animals from foot and mouth disease

Victoria’s zoos have introduced new measures to protect animals from foot and mouth disease.

Zoos Victoria is requesting anyone who lives with livestock (except horses) does not visit zoos at the moment.

Anyone who has been to Indonesia is also asked to wait at least 48 hours after returning before visiting a zoo.

Paid encounters with giraffes, kangaroos and elephants have been cancelled.

The measure will not prevent visitors from being able to look at the animals.

At Melbourne Zoo, the public pathway along the Trail of the Elephants, where elephants walk between paddocks, has been closed to foot traffic to ensure elephants are not walking over soil that could have been brought in from outside the zoo grounds.
