UPDATE: A 17-year-old has been charged with lighting and throwing a flare on the steps of Southern Cross Station.

Police say it’s lucky no-one was seriously injured with 10 flares set off as Melbourne Victory supporters marched to Etihad Stadium before the clash with Sydney FC on Australia Day.

Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said clubs need to work with supporters to rid the A-League of flares.

On Wednesday, 3AW broke the story with this footage:

Melbourne Victory fans at Southern Cross last night before their game. Inappropriate behaviour or extremely passionate fans? Tom says: chanting = great, flares = dumb.
