A WAFL reserves player has been handed a 10-week suspension over a tackle which left an opponent with significant spinal injuries.

East Perth’s Beau Chatley remains in a serious condition after the incident.

3AW Football’s Tim Lane spoke passionately about the incident and he was critical of the AFL.

‘The AFL sets the standard for all other competitions and in the case of tackling, I believe the standard has for too long, been too relaxed,’ he said.

‘I don’t believe it’s extreme to say this was an accident waiting to happen.’

Also speaking on 3AW Football, Leigh Matthews gave his take on the incident.

Matthews did not agree with Tim Lane’s take.

‘I think this is just a tragic accident. This one was just a freakish thing.’

West Perth’s Mitchell Antonio was charged with rough conduct over the tackle and subsequently handed the hefty ban, which has been accepted.

West Perth and Antonio said their focus was entirely on supporting Chatley and his recovery.
