A cyclist has had a close encounter with a bus while travelling 40km/hr in a dedicated bike lane, capturing the close call on a Go-Pro.

Julian Tang told 3AW Mornings he was riding along Heidelberg Road, Westbound over the Merri Creek bridge in Fairfield about 7.50am yesterday when the bus drifted into his lane.

“In the corner of my eye I see a bus, it was so close I could basically unclip my pedals and catch a lift,” he said.

“It was pretty scary.”

Shane McInnes pointed out a bike path can be seen in the video.

“The left hand lane becomes a bike lane between 6.30am and 9.30am,” Julian said.

“There’s mums, there’s kids that use that bike path, its very narrow, I don’t think it’s appropriate that I use that bike path when I’m going 35-40km/hr.”

VicRoads have confirmed there is a sign saying the area is a bike zone from 6.30am – 9.30am but that it is not an official VicRoads sign.

It’s believed the sign may have been placed there by local council.

VicRoads are now investigating the incident.
